“How much ego do you need?” … “Just enough so that you don’t step in front of a bus.” ~Shunryu Suzuki
So, what is the ego, anyway?
Deepak Chopra defines the ego as:
… our self-image, not our true self. It is characterized by labels, masks, images, and judgments.
In short, the ego is what we think we are, not who we really are. How do you answer this question:
If you’re like 80% of the population, your answer starts off with your name, maybe your job, then the other roles you fill in your day to day. Yes?
It’s these labels that go about shaping our views of ourselves, and others.
How differently would you describe yourself, without the labels?
Have you ever felt like you were just not being good, smart, insert-label-here enough? That’s your ego. Find yourself offended? Ego.
Do yourself a favor. The next time these feelings creep into your day, tell them to get lost.
A loving dismissal:
Ego, thank you for again coming to my aid. I appreciate your devotion to keeping me safe. This, is not a situation that requires your assistance. You can go now. I love you.
I’d love to hear how it works for you!
Thank you for growing with me
